Four vehicles down from Emily’s silver Audi, a man sat behind the wheel of a red BMW, watching as Bridget Jackson was grabbed by uniformed police officers and escorted into the police station. The figure watched Emily and Angela talk quietly, then saw Angela follow her sister inside. The private investigator stood there for a moment, looking lost and deflated. Then she was on the move, hurrying towards her car. The man grabbed a mobile phone from the dashboard and dialled a number. A moment later, a familiar voice answered.

“The police have arrested the girl. Her sister’s with her,” the man said.

“What about the PI?”

The man paused, spying the silver Audi pulling away from the kerb. “She’s on the move.”

“Then follow her. And don’t be stupid enough to get caught.”

The man said nothing. The line went dead.

The private investigator was getting away, moving further down the street. Turning the key in the ignition, the man started the car, turned the wheel, and began to follow.
